「 Satori 」- Alex Besikian

Artbook - Impressions of Japan

Über den Projekt

INTENTION(S)

In february 2017 I will drop my 3rd instrumental solo album, Satori. This new release will come with a limited edition artbook.

I worked on Satori (LP & Book) following a similar process : reflecting my impressions of Japan. These drawings are inspired by archives pictures, books, films and travels I made in Japan since 2014.

« Satori » comes from the Zen philosophy, meaning « spiritual awakening ». The title is a tribute to Jack Kerouac’s novel and Roland BarthesEmpire of the Signs, two books that led me to discover the Japanese culture.

MY PROCESS

Origins

I pick fragments of existing pictures that I transform through drawings. I never try to illustrate or copy those photographs, they just help me to create new abstract forms.
We usually try to see familiar forms in abstract art, but that’s the opposite way that I’m interested in and that helps me to draw. By looking for untold mysteries in familiar forms.

Source

By reading Jack Kerouac’s Satori in Paris and The Dharma Bums, I got struck by Japanese Zen gardens. I found in these places an echo to my work.

For few years, most of the pictures I use to draw from are directly linked to Japanese culture. Through the years, lots of books confirmed my growing interest for it, such as Tanizaki Junichiro's In Praise of Shadows , Okakura Kazuko’s The Book of Tea, Augustin Berque reflections or Wim Wenders’ documentaries.

Methods

I’m not trying to represent an exotic country. I only use samples of hiragana or architecture that can’t be identified. These shapes are strange to me and I’m stranger to them. This landscape is already abstract and helps me to create new visual forms in order to question figurative art.

THE BOOK

The music doesn't comment the pictures, the drawings don't illustrate the music. They both create a dialogue, question and complete each other. This project is also my way to finally combine my two ways of creating.

The book features around 10 drawings and a text to explain my work in French, English & translated into Japanese by Shing02 (Nujabes, Samurai Champloo).

• Size : 29 x 17 cm

• Pages : 28

THE ALBUM

Satori is the result of the creative energy I got from travelling to Japan.

I will release the Vinyl version 12 » - 33RPM on my label, Akromégalie Records
500 copies distributed by HHV.DE in Europe and Rockwell Product Shop in Japan.

Japanese CD version will be released by Rockwell Product Shop.
300 copies edition which includes 2 bonus tracks featuring Segawa Tatsuya (trumpet) & Uyama Hiroto (t-sax).

ULULE

As the whole Vinyl pressing's costs will be at my own expense, I need a financial support to release my book. This crowd funding campaign allows me to offer exclusive content to people who want to be part of the Satori project. It will also help me to release an appropriate edition in term of quantity.

If we go beyond the objective, the funds will be used for :

• improving the book's printing (paper, additional color pages...)
• printing more copies
• offering more counterparts
• organizing the Satori release party (live show + exhibition / Paris, 2017)
